The tour begins on the Royal Mile, Edinburgh outside St Giles Cathederal. The walking tour spends 20 minutes in the Old Town where you will hear about the people who used to live there (and the things they used to do to each other) before heading to Greyfriars Kirkyard, the oldest graveyard in the Old Town. During the tour of the graveyard you’ll hear some stories about the people who are buried there, things that make the graveyard famous and ways it’s influenced the world around it. So, it’s all quite light hearted so far. Then we head into a locked section known as the Covenanter’s Prison – the world’s first concentration camp. And then into the Black Mausoleum, a tomb which is lair to the worlds best documented case of supernatural activity – The MacKenzie Poltergeist.
Are you brave enough?
More recently, City of the Dead have gained access to the only unused section of the South Bridge Vaults and allow Lesault access with tour groups. Known as ‘Damnation Alley’, this section of the vaults has a terrible legacy which kept it empty long after the rest of the bridge was being used. Hear all about it, and maybe experience its more sinister side on the Underground City of the Dead Tour. – Remember to ask for Lesault by name!
